God Bless America

I've never been one to wear my patriotism on my sleeve. It's a private thing to me - like one's relationship with the Almighty. It has its public element, and rightly so, where we acknowledge our allegiance together in a fitting and dignified manner, but as for strapping something red, white, and blue onto a bandwagon and riding it into town with one of those "God bless the troops" country songs blaring on the radio, and waving the flag around, I'll pass. The amount of patriotic bling you're wearing or sporting on your pick-up doesn't make you a better American than those of us who respect and love our country quietly. It's not what you wear or how much noise you make. It's what you do. How you build up neighborhood, municipality, state, and country. It's who you put into public office, and why. But it's not hoopla, baubles, and trinkets, and the number of star spangled e-mails you send out.

All that being said, there's nothing wrong with a little bit of the color waving...
